Words are one of the most powerful tools available to everyone. Words can inspire or deflate. Words can create or destroy. Words can give hope or despair.
One of the quickest, most powerful ways to be a more effective leader is to give more attention to what you say. Appreciation, personal responsibility, authentic commitment, respectful disagreement are all powerful ways of speaking that create connection, mutuality and generative thinking. So why do we fail to consistently speak in these ways and fall victim to blaming, complaining, commanding, etc.? Humans are emotional creatures and as such, we are hardwired to react. Reacting when things are going wrong, however, at best keeps you stuck in a bad situation and at worst exacerbates the issues.
